Fabulous Vegan Options In Mérida

Are you looking for delicious vegan options in Mérida? The city has great options for vegans and vegetarians despite the pandemic doing its absolute best to destroy small businesses (grrrr). Here are four locally-owned fabulous restaurants that have managed to keep going during these difficult times. Give them some love, show your support and eat healthily and responsibly at the same time! Whooo, what a  win-win situation.

I’m not actually vegan but I am in the process of drastically reducing my meat and dairy consumption as part of my efforts to live a more sustainable life. Over the past year, I’ve made significant changes to the way my family lives and thinks about things. You can read about my personal journey and the great efforts of Mérida in the following articles: living sustainably in Mérida, travelling sustainably in Mérida and general sustainable travel.

Changomango

Changomango in Campestre is a small outdoor restaurant that has done well to last out through the pandemic. Their food is healthy, delicious and fun. Even my vehemently non-vegan kids ask to eat here. Enjoy their smoothies as you gobble down a vegan burger or their incredible vegan ceviche.

If you’re looking for great day trips from Mérida, then you know that MexicoCassie has you covered!

Monique’s Bakery And Fermentation Lab

Although Monique’s Bakery isn’t fully vegan, it has a good section of its menu dedicated specifically to vegan food. It’s probably best known for its fake-fish tacos (sadly these haven’t survived the pandemic but I hold out hope they’ll be back one day), vegan pizza (apparently the best vegan pizza, ever, according to my vegan friends) and for various other vegan dishes such as yummy vegan hotcakes. Since the pandemic, this great place has gone delivery only and the menu is vastly reduced but it’s still worth checking out what they’re offering by following them on Facebook (also if you’re lucky you’ll catch one of Monique’s hilarious FB posts).

In addition, if you’re into kombucha, probiotics or vegan yoghurt options then Monique’s is the place to get your fix. It’s also great that Monique’s openly declares itself a safe space for all. No judgement and no prejudices with your breakfast, lunch or pizza supper!!

PIZZA NIGHT Friday and Saturday

Rincon Veganx

I failed to get to Rincon Veganx when it was actually open because the hours are a little tricky with small children so I took the only sensible option and ordered delivery. We got their vegan hotdogs, a mushroom salad and a portobello burger. All was delicious. I also adore that on their website they declare themselves to be punk-riot and feminist.

Manik Bal

Another restaurant that is sadly only delivery these days, Manik Bal is delicious, healthy and vegan. I highly recommend following them on FB so you don’t miss out on their delicious delivery options. My favourite is their vegan tamales and my kids were pretty happy with them too.

If you want to know more about eating in Mérida (because many restaurants here in the city do actually have vegan and vegetarian options), you could check out my article about where to get breakfast in Mérida and also how to order breakfast in Mexico. If street-food has you interested, I’ve got you covered there, too.

Ice Cream Options

Handily, there are at least two easy options for vegan ice-cream when you’re walking around Mérida.

Delicious watermelon vegan ice cream at Colón

  1. Pola – here the milk and water-based ice-creams are kept in separate freezers so there’s no mixing up (I believe this to be correct).
  2. Colón – almost all the ice-creams are made with water and, since Colón ice cream is something of an institution in Mérida it’s fab that vegans can join in with the tradition of sitting and eating incredible ice-cream as the sun sets over the city.

Inevitably new restaurants will open up and others close down. Let me know if you hear of somewhere new I need to include in my roundup.
