Mérida Scavenger hunt
Paseo de Montejo / Centro Historico
✅ Who are the two people on the plinth at the bottom of Paseo de Montejo? – what do you know about them?
✅ See if you can figure where to take a photo of the main Mérida letters from above
✅ Get a photo of the whole family sitting in the famous white chairs – what do you know about them?
✅ What night of the week is the city cathedral lit up with colours? Find out and go and watch it.
✅ Find the statue of the mother and child – take a photo pretending you’re a kid in that family (but don’t climb on it, obviously)
✅ Hire bikes on Sunday and join in the Biciruta. Be sure to take a break to visit the Monumento a la Patria and take a photo with your favourite section. While you’re there, nip into the nearby bakery and pick your favourite pastry/cake snack.
✅ Which museum lets you play with musical instruments?
✅ Where will you find a beetle with jewels on its back? What can you find out about these?
✅ Are you likely to get up early enough to see the police raise the flag on Plaza Grande on a Monday morning? Did you know that Monday is ‘flag day’ in Mexico?
Interesting houses
✅ Find a house entirely covered in tiles.
✅ Can you spot a huge pink house that has peacocks in the garden?
✅ Find a giraffe house. Not sure what it is? You’ll know when you see one.
Market / Food
✅ Find a marquesita stand and order one for everyone – try different flavours. Which is your favourite? Dare you try cheese and jam?
✅ What is castacan? Head to the market, find it and try it.
✅ When you’re in the Lucas de Galvez market find where they make tortillas. How many do you get for $10 pesos?
✅ Find piñata alley, walk down and choose your favourite piñata. What is it? Take a photo.
✅ What is the weirdest flavour ice cream Pola sells? Head there on a Monday to find out. Will you try it?
Other areas of Mérida
✅ When you visit the cementerio can you find the hennequin workers’ tomb?
✅ Can you find General Popo? Take a photo of you pointing at him, try not to giggle.
✅ Where in Merida can you ride a train for $1 peso per person?
✅ Head to Parque las Americas after 5 pm to play with local kids.

This is such a great idea to involve kids! I think I’m going to have to steal this idea of scavenger hunts for kids when on holidays in future. The art in your “Art in Merida article that this scavenger hunt leads to is incredible and vibrant. Looks like a lovely city, and you can’t go wrong with an ice-cream prize. Thanks for sharing!
