If you’re looking for the perfect Mexico-related Christmas gift for your Mexico-obsessed friend or family member then I’m right here to help you out.

➡️ And, of course, if you’re going to be in my beloved Mérida for Christmas then you know I have ALL the information you require to ensure a magical time is had by all.

➡️ Before we dive into this list of excellent Mexico-focused gifts though, let’s figure out if you or your friends are really Mexico obsessed:

⭐️ How do I know if someone I love is Mexico obsessed?⭐️

✅ Have they visited Mexico more than three times?

✅ Do they know their tequila from their mezcal?

✅ Can they tell you what a cenote is and what to do with it?

✅ Do they refer to Mexico’s capital city as ‘Mexico’, ‘DF’ or ‘CDMX’ rather than Mexico City?

✅ Do they snootily look at your plate of hardshell tacos and inform you it’s nothing like eating “real street food in Mexico”?

I’m afraid that a ‘yes’ to two or more of these questions means they are, without a doubt, Mexico-obsessed and therefore require you to take this into account when buying them a gift.

Mexico-related gifts: books

I love to read and especially love to read books written by Mexicans, or about Mexico. Here are a few of my favourites.

⭐️ The House of Broken Angels by Luis Alberto Urrea

⭐️ I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sanchez

⭐️ I’ll Sell You A Dog by Juan Pablo Villalobos

⭐️ The Pearl by John Steinbeck

And for those who love to dive into Mexican culture through history and art, these are my two personal favourite books. I didn’t read either cover-to-cover, instead, I dipped (and still dip) in and out when the mood took me or when I had a specific question.

⭐️ The Mexico City Reader

⭐️ Mexican Muralism, A Critical History

⭐️ ⭐️ Give a charitable donation to Yucatán Giving Outreach at Christmas (or any time of the year) to really make a difference to the country you and your family love ⭐️ ⭐️

Mexico-related gifts: for the tequila and mezcal lovers

Yes, I love tequila and yes, this is my favourite tequila pictured. My husband bought me the Tequila Dictionary (below) for my birthday during the covid lockdown. I won’t deny it comes in extremely handy, as does the mezcal recipe book. I recently added the Tequila Field Guide to my collection and highly recommend it as a gift for anyone you know who enjoys a tequila or three.

⭐️ The Tequila Dictionary

⭐️ Mezcal – The history, craft and cocktails of the world’s ultimate artisanal spirit

⭐️ Tequila and Tacos – a guide to spirited pairings

⭐️ A Field Guide to Tequila – what is is, where it’s from and how to taste it

Mexico-related gifts: food lovers

Some people love to cook and will love these three recipe books I suggest. The first is jam-packed full of all my favourite Yucatecan recipes. For spice lovers, this hot sauce kit has to be a winner and who doesn’t need a bag of spicy candy in the cupboard? Let your taco-loving friends take their taco-eating experience to the next level with this ridiculous taco tray!

⭐️ Yucatán – Recipes from a culinary expedition

⭐️ Provecho – 100 Vegan Mexican Recipes

⭐️ Masa – Techniques, Recipes and Reflections on a Timeless Staple

⭐️ Spicy Candy Variety Pack

⭐️ Hot Sauce Making Kit

⭐️ Silly Taco Holder (set of 4) – I dare you to click on this link. Believe me when I say the picture below does NOT represent the taco holder I selected for you

Mexico-related gifts: a bit of fun!

Help your Mexico-love become Mexican food with this awesome burrito blanket! My younger child has this blanket and she is obsessed!

I get called Mamacita a lot so this t-shirt makes me giggle. You obviously know someone who needs this t-shirt, right? Just try not to keep it for yourself.

Cactus Cushion – because who doesn’t secretly want to sit on a cactus? Just me????

Mexico-related gifts: trips

For those who are truly loved, cherished and adored by you, why not take them to Mexico? Utter winner because you get a trip to Mexico as part of their gift. Genius.

For inspiration, why not browse my site and then book some of the best experience-gifts imaginable such as

Such a creative idea for a gift guide!! I love Mexico! (And I’ve only spent a few days there haha but being from Texas I feel SO close hahah).

Thanks, Erin. Yeah, having just spent a few days in Texas I can see why. Everywhere I turned there was something Mexican to see or eat. X

Okay, so I knew I liked the country, but now it’s official that I’m obsessed – I just ticked all the criteria!! ? Great ideas for Mexico lovers.

Sorry. It’s an affliction many of us suffer with!

This is a great list, Cassie! As a fellow expat living in Mexico, well, I wish I’d thought to buy a bunch of futbol jersies for my nephews and my niece. They all play futbol in the US and I think they’d like them. I’m actually going to look next time I’m in Walmart. I want a new camera, too! I love my “good” camera, but it’s so much trouble to take it anywhere that I leave it at home.

According to your checklist, I’m 83% Mexican obsessed! Pray tell what makes a good guacamole? And then I’ll be solid! Great choice of items by the way! I love the loteria aesthetic and am thinking of inserting them into all my welcome bags at my wedding ? So excited that Oaxaca is mezcal region! I’ve been warning my guests that the stuff is potent but I know so many people are gonna come home wwith them as souvenirs. Thanks for the inspiration!

I guess a good guacamole depends on the quality of avocados, what else goes in and the care taken. Lime is important for me. We used to put sweet bananas in it when I lived in Rwanda but I don’t think that would fly with my now I’m practically Mexican. Have a fabulous wedding. X

I think I hit 100% on Mexico-obsessed – I wish I was there right now. I would love spending Christmas in Merida.

    Cassie · 06/12/2018 at 11:15 pm

Hahah. Not such a bad thing to be, 100% obsessed!
