Your expert guide to awesome day trips from Córdoba

Córdoba is, for many, a favourite day trip from Sevilla or Málaga but what if you opt to stay in Córdoba for a few days?
My preference is always for slow travel and there’s so much to see and do in Córdoba that one day really isn’t enough to explore this popular destination anyway. So why not break with popular tourist tradition, allow yourself plenty of time to get to know Córdoba city and then strike out to see what else the province of Córdoba (and beyond) has to offer?

What must you see in Córdoba?
I live in nearby Sevilla and love to spend my time exploring Córdoba, narrow alleys of the pueblos blancos & the majesty of the natural parks nearby. I visit regularly and have never once been bored or felt that I’m struggling to find things to do.

Córdoba is undeniably one of the prettiest Spanish cities you could visit. Do not miss: the Mezquita and its Bell Tower, the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, the Jewish Quarter, the Roman Bridge, Palacio de Viana (& the other gorgeous patios), the Torre de la Calahorra, and of course, aimless wandering around the the old town.
Once you’ve seen all these, it’s time to consider leaving this wonderfully historic city and exploring the rest of the region.
Taking day trips from Córdoba
If you’re going to take day trips from Córdoba you’ll need to decide how to do this. My personal preference is to rent a car and explore on my own. I like the freedom of being on my own schedule & having the option to detour if I see a cool castle or river I want to check out. However, I can’t deny that I also love the ease of joining a group tour and having someone show me what’s what.
🚗 Check rental car options or hire a professional driver if you’re not keen on driving yourself.

👣 I always use GetYourGuide and Viator to book my own family’s tours when we’re away from home. On both these sites you will find English speaking guides (group tours & private guides) offering a few full day and half day tours from Córdoba.
🚆 It’s also possible to use trains (both the high-speed AVE & regional trains to explore the region) although this requires more planning as it’s generally recommended to book trains well in advance in Europe. Córdoba’s train station is fairly central in the city.
Where to stay in Córdoba
Although Córdoba definitely considered to be more of a ‘day trip’ option for many visitors to Southern Spain, in my opinion, it’s definitely worth considering spending a few days here
🏨 Top hotel recommendation: Las Casas de la Judería de Córdoba – If simple luxury is your aim then this central hotel is where you need to be. The hotel is made up of 17th & 18th century houses, gardens, fountains and patios. There is an outdoor pool and spectacular roof terrace.

🏨 Top apartment recommendation: Duplex near the Mezquita – This beautifully located and decorated apartment even has free parking. Set in grounds with patios, fountains and more this is a real treat of a location in Córdoba.

🏨 Top budget friendly hotel recommendation: Hospedería Luis de Góngora – This great value guest house is located in the Jewish quarter in a typical Córdoba house. It serves a good breakfast.

Córdoba Province
Medina Azahara

Also written as Medinat Al-Zahra, this is a fascinating archaeological site just outside Córdoba.
This site was built in the 10th century and was once the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate in Spain. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site where you can see the remains of the city, part of an early medieval palace as well as the gorgeous ruins of the Mezquita (the first in Spain to point towards Mecca).
I do highly recommend checking this place out if you can. You will need between 2 – 3 hours to see it properly.
👣 We visited without a tour but I actually wish we’d gone with a guide as there is so much to see and learn here and I know we missed out by not having an expert by our sides.
🚌 You park/arrive at the excellent visitors’ centre with a small museum. From here you have to take a bus (€3 per adult €1.50 per child) to the actual ruins.

Castillo de Almodóvar del Río

This fabulous castle and fortress sits on a hill overlooking the Guadalquivir River. It was built around the year 740 CE by the Moorish rulers of the region. The (fully restored) castle has been open to the public since 2001 and makes for a great day out for anyone who enjoys a good traditional castle. It is particularly a great thing to do if you’re visiting with kids.
🐉 And yes, before you ask, you have seen it in the Game of Thrones
Parque Periurbano la Sierrazuela

This small forest just outside Córdoba is a really fun place to spend a day although it would be hard to get to without a car. Whether you take a picnic or plan to eat in the cafe here you’ll have a lot of fun. The forest is shaded and cool and there are picnic tables throughout the forest.
As you walk you’ll find ancient dolmens, reconstructed neolithic houses and wonderful views. There is also an aerial tree top course here although I’ve never seen it in action.
Explore the wine & oil route

Did you know that the valleys in the south of the province of Cordoba is a wine-producing region? The south of Cordoba province is known as Campiña de Cordoba and it’s covered in olive trees and grapevines. From this region come some of Spain’s very best olive oils (this was a thriving Roman olive oil region) and some deep, sherry-like wines made from the Pedro Ximénez grape called the Montilla-Moriles wine.
MexicoCassie recommended tour: Spend the day on a 5⭐️ luxury tour of vineyards & olive orchards with a fabulous sommelier, Mara de Miguel (considered Córdoba’s finest) in a convertible. Learn about the region’s viticulture & the history of olive oil in the region. Includes lunch and numerous tastings including wine, olive oil, balsamic vinegars and even a locally matured whisky.
Parque Natural de las Sierras Subbéticas
(Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park)

Perfectly accessible for a day trip, the Parque Natural Sierres Subbéticas is also an incredible place to base yourself for a few days if you enjoy wild views, soaring hills, cave and streams. The highest peak here is La Tiñosa at 1570m above sea level. Whether you want to visit for a day or stay a few days, I highly recommend Zuheros as an incredible place. This park is one of those places that the Spanish just adore for walking and exploring.
Pueblos Blancos in Córdoba

Mostly within the Sierras Subbéticas are some utterly gorgeous pueblos blancos to explore.
Visit the prettiest village: Zuheros – This gorrgeous small town is known as one of Spain’s most beautiful towns and I’d absolutely agree. With its white, red-roofed homes, its brilliantly located castle—slap bang in the middle of town— and its towering craggy hills behind the town, Zuheros is not somewhere you’ll quickly forget.

Luque – don’t miss Hisn Luk Castle or the Cueva Ecantada where you can see Neolithic & Chalcolithic cave art
Carcabuey – has a lovely castle, winding streets and great views, located as it is in the heart of the Subbeticas. “La Ruta del Toro de Cuerda” is a walking route through the village following in the footsteps of the runners when bulls were released in the town.
Montilla – anyone who is interested in wine or olive oil will want to visit here. Amontillado sherry is made from the pale wine of Montilla. Alvear & Gran Barquero are 2 large vineyards in Montilla. The Vendimia is a wine-harvest festival that is held here every year in early September. The celebration starts off with the treading of the grapes harvested from the local vineyards.
This “primer mosto” (first pressing) is an offering to the Virgen de las Viñas. As well as the treading of the grapes in traditional style, throughout the festival there are also different competitions related to wine.
Cabra – this small town is one of the entrance points to the Sierras Subbéticas. Around Cabra are smaller villages including Gaena, Las Huertas Bajas and La Benita. This area is known for the red marble of Cabra (mármol rojo de Cabra), which is actually a highly polished limestone.
Montoro – if you’re looking for active adventures, this is small town on a bend in the Guadalquivir River is your top spot. For water based fun, head to the Reservoirs of Arenoso & Yeguas where you can hire kayaks & paddle boards.
➕ If you’re into small towns near mountain ranges then I also highly recommend considering stopping off in Antequera, right in the middle of Andalucía as it’s historically and geographically an extremely interesting place.
Priego de Córdoba
Located further to the south than the pueblos blancos mentioned above, Priego de Córdoba is in the Sierra de Priego. Check out the Casa Museo Don Niceto Alcalá-Zamora y Torres, the Castillo de Priego de Córdoba (15th century), 2 miradors, Balcón del Adarve & Mirador del Calvario and explore the winding narrow alleyways of Barrio de la Villa.
Málaga Province
Málaga City & the Costa del Sol

If people visit Córdoba from Málaga, there’s no reason to not visit Málaga from Córdoba, right? It’s 1hr10 by train or 2 hours by car, which makes it a very doable day trip. It’s also the easiest beach to reach from Córdoba.
Málaga, of course is an extremely famous city where you can chill on the beach, visit art galleries, museums, learn about Picasso, visit castles & eat exquisite food.
👣 Take the train to Málaga & then book yourself onto a Guru Walk free walking tour or book a more comprehensive tour of the main sites (cathedral, alcazar and castle)

Ronda

Ronda is one of the most famous towns in Málaga Province. People visit here to marvel at the 3 bridges that span the magnificent gorge in the centre of the town. There are some wonderful restaurants & museums here to check out too.
👣 If you don’t have a car, book a train to Ronda and pick up a tour there – there are free Guru Walk tours as well as more exciting via ferrata adventure tours to choose from

Mijas Pueblo

Up in the hills above Málaga is the magnificent village of Mijas (not to be confused with Mijas Costa, which is, unsurprisingly, on the coast). This is a lovely place to wander around for the day. I particularly love that it’s possible to see all the way to North Africa from the miradors here (on a clear day).
👣 To visit for the day you’d really need a car or driver of your own. You could join a walking tour of the village or book a tuk-tuk adventure around the sites

Sevilla Province
Sevilla

And because people visit Córdoba from Sevilla, it makes sense that it’s possible to visit Sevilla from Córdoba. It’s a quick 40 minutes on the train or 90 minute drive so why wouldn’t you?
Sevilla, really is a place that deserves at least 3 days of your time but if you only have 1 day, grab it, use it, love it!
Don’t miss the Alcazar (imperative to book ahead), the Cathedral, Las Setas and exploring the old Jewish quarter.
👣 Book a train to Sevilla as well as a free walking tour of Sevilla. Or, book a guided tour of the Alcázar, cathedral and Giralda (or just the Alcázar if you don’t want to exhaust yourself)
