Your transport options

🚘 Personally, I love driving in Spain. The intercity roads are generally in excellent condition, as are the country roads, and there are very few toll roads in the south of the country.
The only issue is the actual city driving, and that’s because the cities and villages are so old they were build long before cars existed. Roads are often extremely narrow, and one way. And of course, parking isn’t easy.
My recommendations, if you want to drive, are to read the full MexicoCassie guide to driving in southern Spain, and to always plan your parking before you set out for any destination → Check your rental car options here.
→ Read the MexicoCassie guide to using an eSim in Spain – particularly useful when driving.
🚌 🚆It’s important to remember, when considering public transport that if you’re planning on visiting small towns and villages, there may be only one bus a day in and out of a destination. To me this can be quite stressful. However, if you enjoy that side of travel planning:
Train – trains are good in general in Spain. Between Cádiz and Sevilla you can book in advance, while for the closer destinations, you can show up and catch a ‘cercania’ train on the day → Check train timetables here.
Bus – there are both intercity buses and local buses. Intercity buses can be booked in advance, local buses you just pay as you enter → Check intercity bus timetables here.
👣 There are plenty of tours offered from Cádiz, including to some of the smaller destinations → Check Viator and GetYourGuide to see what’s available.
🚆 Day trips from Cádiz by train
It is important to book your longer distance train journeys in advance in Europe or you stand a good chance of either not getting a decent price or not finding any remaining seats available at all.

Of course, these destinations are possible to visit by car, too. Please always remember to plan your parking if you’re going to drive.
Jerez de la Frontera

SHERRY, FLAMENCO, HORSES, CULTURE & GREAT FOOD
⏲ Between 30 – 40 minutes by train 💶 Tickets as low as €8 return if bought in advance
Jerez is a gorgeous small city that receives far fewer visitors than you might expect given how interesting it is and how nicely located it is between Cádiz and Sevilla.
What to do in Jerez: visit a sherry bodega to learn about the history of this gorgeous drink, watch a flamenco performance, visit the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art to watch a performance, visit the alcazar, enjoy strolling around the beautiful old city and eat great food.
It’s a perfect one day destination from Cádiz for anyone looking to get to know another southern Spanish city.

Sevilla

ALCÁZAR, HISTORY, CULTURE, FLAMENCO
⏲ 1 hr 40 by train 💶 Tickets as low as €26 return if bought in advance
Sevilla, the capital of Andalucía is an outstandingly beautiful city. It’s not an enormous place but it’s noticeably bigger than either Cádiz or Jerez de la Frontera.
What to do in Sevilla: The Alcázar, Cathedral & Giralda and Archivos de India comprise Sevilla’s UNESCO World Heritage site. If you want to visit the Alcázar, it’s imperative to book a ticket in advance. Cathedral tickets can be bought on the day or advance, and it’s free and easy to enter the archivos.
People also love to visit the Plaza de España (photo left above), Las Setas and to get lost in the narrow streets of the Casco Antiguo (Old City).

El Puerto de Santa Mariá (Cercanias train)
SHERRY, BEACHES, HISTORY
⏲ 30 minutes 💶 €2 one way, buy ticket from the machine on the day, no advance purchase necessary
What to do in El Puerto de Santa María: Explore the city, noticing that this small town has a lot to do with Spain’s early conquistador past. You’ll find Plaza Cristobal Colón (Columbus), a Plaza Juan de la Cosa (this guy drew the first ever European world map in 1500 and he also apparently owned the Santa María, the boat infamously linked to Columbus’ second voyage to the Americas. There’s a mural of the map on the plaza, which is pretty interesting.
Visit the Castillo de San Marcos and the Palacio de Aranibar, relax on the beach and drink some sherry in this corner of the famous sherry triangle.
🚌 Day trips from Cádiz that are possible by bus
If you are particularly intrepid, you could take a bus to some of the small villages from Cádiz. My personal opinion is that the stress of sticking to bus timetables isn’t worth it, but I know plenty of people are pro-bus travel so here we are!
You can check the local bus routes here
Sanlúcar de Barrameda

BEACHES, CASTLE, SHERRY
⏲ 1hr15 🚏Line 960 to 967 + 970 – 972 from Plaza Asdrúbal or the bus station
What to do in Sanlúcar de Barrameda: this is another nice small town with a long history and good beaches (sensing a theme here?). Visit the fabulous fifteenth century castle, drink manzanilla sherry in this final corner of the sherry triangle, wander the streets, and hang out on the most gorgeous plaza I’ve seen in Andalucía, and then head over to the beach to relax.
The Fabrica de Hielo is now a decent visitors’ centre for the Parque Nacional de Doñana and you can also buy tickets here to take the ferry just into the park.
Note that the ferry doesn’t have a timetable, it runs when the ferry master decides it runs.
Conil de la Frontera
LONG LAZY LUNCHES, BEAUTIFUL PUEBLO, GORGEOUS BEACHES
⏲ 50 minutes 🚏 Lines 911- 914
What to do in Conil de la Frontera: Conil is somewhere to take it slow, to stroll the streets, relax over a long lunch, maybe (definitely) climb the Torre de Guzmán and visit the Chanca Cultural Centre.
🚘 Day trips from Cádiz that are best with a car
Some of these destinations are technically possible by bus but it would require a lot of planning, squeezing adventures in around infrequent buses. Better to visit with a car.

Tarifa

HISTORY, DOLPHINS, TRIPS TO MOROCCO, WIND & KITE SURFING
⏲ 2 hr bus or 1hr30 in the car
What to do in Tarifa: Tarifa is one of my favourite destinations in Cádiz. It’s a beautiful small city located at the most southern point of mainland Spain. Wander the streets, eat fantastic food, take a dolphin / whale watching tour, enjoy the beaches. Here, by the way, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet, you can stand between the two beaches (as I’m doing in the photo above), which is pretty awesome.
🏳️🌈 🏳️⚧️ noticeably queer friendly as you explore

Caños de Meca

AMAZING BEACH, GREAT FOOD, TRAFALGAR LIGHTHOUSE
⏲ 1 hour drive
What to do in Caños de Meca: there’s not exactly much to do here but it is a strikingly beautiful beach area (it’s actually one of my favourite beaches) and it’s fun that it’s the site of the Battle of Trafalgar if you’re interested in history.
You can walk up to the lighthouse for nice views over both beaches. There are good restaurants here, too.
Bolonia & Baelo Claudía

ROMAN RUINS IN A MAGNIFICENT SETTING
⏲ 1hr 20 drive
What to do in Baelo Claudía: I’m mad at the Romans for their destruction of Indigenous culture in Europe but we can’t deny that some of their sites have a) lasted extremely well, and b) are very picturesque.
These are absolutely not an exception, in fact, this is the best Roman site in Spain, in my opinion. It’s free to enter, there’s an excellent museum, the ruins are interesting, and best of all, on a clear day you can see all the way over to the coast of Morocco! It’s stunning.
And there’s a gorgeous beach here with one of the most beautiful dunes in Europe. It’s super fun to climb if you’re feeling physical.
There are some good chiringuito options for lunch here too.
→ Other beach town options include: Chipiona, Rota, and Barbate
Pueblos Blancos

BEAUTIFUL, SMALL OLD TOWNS, MAGNIFICENT VIEWS & NARROW STREETS
→ Use the MexicoCassie guide to Cádiz Province to plan your trips to the pueblos blancos in Cádiz
There are numerous tours that will take you to visit the famous pueblos blancos (white villages) of Cádiz. Or you can visit with a car. If you enjoy peace and quiet, it is also a delight to stay a night or two in these small towns so you can experience them without all the tourists and day trippers.
Vejer de la Frontera – known for its particularly beautiful Plaza de España and gorgeous tiled fountain. There is a good museum, old city defensive walls and a 9th century castle here.
Arcos de la Frontera – I really like this pueblo blanco (photo right). Perched high up on rocky outcrop, this is a truly beautiful place. Famous for its ten church bells and many churches, there’s also a castle, a parador, a gorgeous garden (Jardín Andalusí) and some stunning miradors with views over the surrounding countryside.
Here, don’t forget to look up to see the guardacantones, kinds of buttresses or reinforcements of the corners of old buildings – very cool to see. The most famous and astounding is Callejón de las Monjas where the buttresses were built in 1699 to prevent the walls of the church from buckling under the weight of its vaults.
🅿️ I recommend parking in the municipal carpark at Plaza Andaluciá and walking the fifteen minutes into the old centre of town.
Zahara de la Sierra – one of the most beautiful of the pueblos blancos, Zahara de la Sierra is high up on a craggy outcrop. Its most important feature is the castle (above left). This is not a day trip for people who can’t walk up steep steps and paths.
Olvera – again, this is a fairly steep town to explore, with the fabulous castle and church sitting atop the hill. Views from the castle are spectacular. If you’re feeling athletic after climbing up to the castle (yes, very much up) you can also climb the Peñon del Sagrado Corazón.
Setenil de las Bodegas

A TOWN OF WHITEWASHED HOUSES BUILT INTO THE CLIFFS
⏲ 1 hr 50 drive
What to do in Setenil de las Bodegas: Visit the Calle Cuevas del Sol and Calle Cuevas de la Sombre, the two most famous streets in the town, on either side of the river. Stroll around the narrow streets, visit a house built into the caves, walk up to the mirador over the town.
→ Use the MexicoCassie guide to Cádiz Province to plan your day trip to Setenil de las Bodegas
Salinas de Chiclana (Salt flats)

SALT, SPA & LUNCH
⏲ 35 minutes drive
While you can visit the salt flats all year around, over the summer period (starting June 1), you can also enjoy the natural salt spa experience offered here – relax in the salt water, enjoy a mud wrap, a salt scrub or massage.
I highly recommend the €55 package of museum tour, salt water/mud experience and lunch. The tour is only in Spanish although the website is also in English. The food is excellent, the museum fascinating and the spa experience, a lot of fun. There are also flamingos around, which is cool. This is one of my personal favourite experiences in the Cádiz area.
